A public hearing on systemic risk took place on the 14th of May 2008 at the European Parliament. The event, organised by two major political groups - ALDE and PSE - was chaired by the MEPs Daniel Daianu (ALDE) and Ieke van den Burg (PSE), co-rapporteurs on the Lamfalussy follow-up and the future structure of a report on financial supervision.
The discussion panel was made up of four distinguished experts in the area of banking and financial markets: Paul Davies (Financial Times), David Green (Financial Reporting Council), Graham Bishop (Interinstitutional Monitoring Group) and Nicolas Veron (Bruegel).
On the 3rd of June 2008, MEPs heared from a range of experts on options for improving the EU's supervisory structure for financial services.
The evidence given at the hearing feeded into the drafting of a report on the issue by Daniel Dăianu (ALDE, RO) and Ieke van den Burg (PES, NL).

Daniel Daianu's most recent book "The macroeconomics of EU integration.The case of Romania" has been published.
On the 22th of May 2008, « Le Monde » published a joint letter signed by three former presidents of the European Commission, ten former prime ministers and five former ministers of finance. Initiated by Michel Rocard, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen and Daniel Dăianu, the letter expresses the signatories' concern about the current financial crisis and its effect on world economy.
